THE CITY OF MARKHAM
1925-2009
Current Population

Welcome to Markham Canada's High Tech Capital, Town of Markham is a rather large territory extending from south/east at 11th line & Steeles to Elgin Mills & 404. It is divided into 4 communities known as Markham, Unionville, Thornhill and Milliken Mills.

Unionville, from the 404 to McCowan Rd and south to Hwy 407 is one of the more established parts of Markham with its historic Main St. and century homes. At the tip of Main St. you will find Toogood pond, an 82 acre park featuring a naturalized pond and marsh with a walkway circling the pond. Unionville is home to high-end neighbourhoods such as Cachet, The Bridle Trail and Angus Glen.

Markham, from McCowan Rd east to 11th Line, also has its own Main Street, referred to as "Main St. Markham" with its own share of century homes within the Markham Village. Markham is home to a number of newer communities such as Wismer and Greensborough (north of 16th Av.), Cornell (East of 9th line), and Legacy, Rouge Fairways and upcoming Box Grove (south of Highway 7).

Milliken Mills, south of the 407 to Steeles, is named after three early pioneers who established mill sites in the 18th century. Today, Milliken Mills is home to Markham's only indoor soccer dome and to the Armadale Community centre.

Thornhill is divided in half between the Town of Markham and the City of Vaughan, and runs along both the east and the west sides of Yonge Street. The portion between Yonge Street and the 404 is managed by the Town of Markham. When searching for homes in this area districts, use N01 and N02.

Browse through the Education Quality and Assessment Office (EQAO) website and see how individual schools rank. There are also a number of Montessori schools and other private schools in the area.

If you have children of high-school age, think ahead when buying your home to make sure your home is close to a public bus route since high-school kids will need to bus themselves to school. There are only a few high schools. The main high schools are:
